One of our longer New Zealand horse rides. DAY 1 Leave from Waitohi Downs Stables at approximately 10.00 – 10.30 a.m. and ride around track to influx of Mandamus into Hurunui River. We cross the Hurunui River and ride up Mandamus River onto road, travel along passing Glens of Tekoa Homestead and buildings onto Island Hills Station run by Dan and Mandy Shand. Our two day trip takes us around the track to the influx of the Mandamus River into the Hurunui River. We cross the Hurunui River and ride up Mandamus River to the road. Our one day trip takes us around to the Hurunui River past the highlights of our Half Day Trip.

Travelling up the river, past sheep, cattle and deer to Kanuka Hills we have lunch and boil the billy above the swirling water of the Chutes Rapid. Leave the stable and ride around the track towards the Hurunui River, viewing a vast expanse of flat farm land, braided river bed and the Balmoral Forest. Riding on up the river gorge, brown trout can be observed lying in the crystal clear water. Leave the stable, ride across the horse paddock around the bluff opposite the irrigation intake. Leaving the Hurunui River behind us, we zig-zag our way up to Stoney Face Saddle, on up the ridge to the summit and view the splendour of the Hurunui Plain, Balmoral Forest, Amuri Basin and Banks Peninsula to the far south.
